南画家。豊後生。字は顧絶、初め小虎と号し、のち直入と称する。別号に徳懋・竹翁・酔茗等。田能村竹田に学び、竹田にその才能を認められ養嗣子となる。南宗画学校を開くなど、南画壇の向上に尽力した。明治40年（1907）歿、94歳。
